“Repent and Reform, the Kingdom of God is at Hand”
Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 22, 2012
INTRODUCTION: God holds out to all people, even to the sinners, the chance to convert and reform. The time for conversion and reform is now. We cannot afford to keep kicking the can down the road. The Kingdom of God is at hand.
In the FIRST READING, God gives the Assyrians the chance to repent. He sends Jonah to preach repentance to them. The Assyrians listened and turned from their evil ways and the entire city of Nineveh was saved.
In the SECOND READING, St. Paul cautions us that the time to open ourselves to God’s grace is running out. We must not get so preoccupied with everyday concerns at the expense of eternal life. The only reliable thing we can build our lives on is the blessed life we hope to enjoy with God in eternity.
In the GOSPEL, Jesus emphasizes repentance and conversion as a prerequisite for entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. “The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel”, says Jesus.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The call for conversion and reform is not just a message for other people to hear. We all sin. We all tend to get lazy spiritually. We all tend to get our worldly priorities out of order and put aside the more important things for things that are easier or more fun. The good news is that we all have room to grow in our faith. But opportunities as we all know, do not hang around forever. Conversion and reform is now, not tomorrow. Now is the time to open your life more to Jesus. Like Jonah, Christ was sent to teach us the way to the kingdom of God.
PRAYER
“Almighty and ever living God, direct each thought, each effort of our life, so that the limits of our faults and weaknesses may not obscure the vision of your glory or keep us from the eternal life you have promised.” Amen
